MAPI PST backup

Say that I need to do a reinstall on a client PC and they want to backup their MAPI PST, is this possible? What about with a shared inbox?

I did a test of this with a shared inbox and got an error but, I will be doing some additional testing. I can provide more details - I'd just like to know if maybe I've overlooked the documentation for this as I can't find it in the MAPI tutorial.
