Recipients put user over the limit

Post by supportweb »

Hi,

We are having an issue with our mail enable server where a mailbox user has been prevented from sending emails by the system. Originally the issue appeared to be a mail stuck in the users outbox. This was removed but the issue is ongoing after two weeks and as such their mailbox is practically unusable as each time the customer attempts to send emails the same error keeps perpetually climbing and it has reach over 2500, please see attached images. The user has barely sent anything let alone 2700.

Please can you confirm how we can reset this, also the number he has apparently sent does not go down over time is there not a system in place to reset this number after a certain period of time has passed?

Error message is:
Message: ME-I0xxx: The 2 recipient(s) for mailbox puts it over limit of 2000 per hour (current count 2691).

Time: 05/05/2022 21:20:01

451 Requested action aborted: This mail account has sent too many messages in a short amount of time. Please try later.

Hi,

It sounds like the mailbox has been compromised and being used to send out spam. Did you inspect the messages that were stuck on the outgoing queue folder to see if they were legitimate messages being sent by the mailbox? You need to inspect the SMTP activity and debug log files in respect to the date/time of the notifications that user has exceeded the restriction value to see where the messages are originating from. Would be ideal changing the mailbox password make it complex to prevent the spammer from being able to authenticate (if this is the case).
