Unable to connect Xerox AltaLink C8030 MFP

Post by kiamori »

Seems the Xerox printers have issues connecting to ME servers. The only way I have been able to connect one is to do an IP bypass via the relay function in SMTP and turn off all forms of authentication and encryption as well as only using port 25.

The Xerox printers also work fine with gmail and other email service providers.

Any suggestions on how to make these machines work with ME servers without using IP relay?

Hi,

Can you provide more detail of how you setup the printer to connect via the ME using authentication? Do you have any log snippets of the printer trying to authenticate against the ME SMTP service?

When attempting to authenticate to do scan to email the machine in question gets the following error:
server connection aborted
If I turn on relay for the IP it sends just fine.
If I use a gmail account it works just fine.

In SMTP debug I see the following:
[47268] An attempt to send as mail from {user} occurred but the sender did not authenticate and the IP address (ipaddress) is not defined as a local or privileged IP address. To allow this request, add the IP address to the Privileged IPs list under the SMTP|Relay properties.
the xerox supports starttls encryption only, I have tried with and without encryption on 25,465,587 respectively with username and password and all result in the same failure.

It seems like the xerox is not trying to authenticate, but if I change the mail server to gmail using encryption/authentication it does work.

So the only way I can get the unit to work with Mailenable SMTP is if I add their IP address to relay which is obviously a bad solution.

Any ideas what else could be going on with this unit or Mailenable to cause this problem?

Hi,

What authentication method is the scanner using to authenticate via SMTP? Can you check the SMTP Activity log file to see what the scanner i sending when authenticating?

Hi,

What is logged within the SMTP Debug log at the time of the failure with the RCPT command? From the log snippet you provided the scanning device is not authenticating and issuing the AUTH (or STARTTLS) command to the service. Are you sure you have SMTP authentication enabled in the Xerox scanner settings and selected the relevant encryption type I.e: STARTTLS? Have you enabled STARTTLS within the MailEnable SMTP properties under the "Inbound" tab and configured a valid SSL certificate to be used for MailEnable services as inbound TLS requires a valid SSL certificate?

As per my previous post the only thing logged in debug is
[47268] An attempt to send as mail from {user} occurred but the sender did not authenticate and the IP address (ipaddress) is not defined as a local or privileged IP address. To allow this request, add the IP address to the Privileged IPs list under the SMTP|Relay properties.
Yes, it's enabled and this xerox model only supports STARTTLS for encryption method, I have also tried port 25 without encryption in the xerox settings and it still fails to connect.

StartTLS is enabled and functional in Mailenable as a checkbox under Inbound TLS and under port settings Listen on alternate port 587 with only allow secure auth using SSL/TLS, it also works fine for other devices so the issue seems to be specific to xerox.

SSL Cert is configured under localhost > properties > General(bindings) & SSL

Hi,

Have you tried contacting Xerox support and provide then with copies of the SMTP log file clearly showing that its not sending the AUTH command even though you have set the device to authenticate via SMTP?

Yes, they blame the mail server.

Hi,

I cant see how they can blame the mail server when there is clearly no attempt to authenticate. They have not issued the AUTH or STARTTLS command in the activity log snippet you have shown. If there was evidence of an authentication attempt then we could troubleshoot but there isnt.

Hi,

The client is not sending the AUTH command to the server. You should be seeing something like the log extract below if the client was authenticating:
